Bareboat Sailing Charter: Greece, Florida, Scotland

"Who is staring at the sea is already sailing a little," mused Paul Carvel. Sailing is perhaps the most intimate way to know the sea and her ways. Experienced sailors enjoy the freedom of sailing and the challenge of navigating a vessel from port to port. Anyone can charter a sailing boat such as a catamaran or a sloop with a crew, but only experienced sailors can charter a sailing boat without a crew, also referred to as bareboat sailing.
Bareboat sailing provides the total freedom and privacy of sailing. Before allowing anyone to charter a bareboat sailing excursion, most sailing companies require that proof of the captain's expertise is provided and/or proof that the captain owns a boat of similar size. These companies require that the captain complete a certification process prior to taking possession of the boat, and it is wise to complete this process before giving the company any money or the boat rental will be denied and a refund will have to be processed.
Catamarans are favorites among the boats chartered for bareboat sailing. The catamaran is a twin hulled boat and the hulls are connected by a frame. Catamarans are more difficult to sail than a keel-hulled sailing boat mostly due to the difficulty in tacking. A catamaran can go into much shallower water than a keel-hulled boat and some are made to be beached without damaging them, making this type of boat a favorite for exploring. Catamarans are also faster that traditional keel hulled boats because there is no keel and therefore the hull creates much less drag.
Bareboat sailing is offered by charter companies all over the world. Bareboat sailing around the Greek Islands in the clear, unbelievably blue Aegean Sea is an unforgettable experience. A 31 foot sloop with five sleeping berths and two cabins in high season (August) will cost around $2,100 per week with a 10% discount for two weeks and a 15% discount for three. Low season rates are more economical when one week for the same boat will cost about $1,200. All safety equipment and fresh water are provided with a bareboat vessel, however, travelers will need to bring their own food and personal items.
Bareboat sailing on the US east coast is also a terrific experience and there are some excellent charter companies such as the Barnegat Bay Sailing School in new Jersey. Bareboat sailing in new Jersey is not as costly as Greece and it's closer to home. The Barnegat Bay Sailing School rents sailboats from 19 - 23 feet for bareboat sailing adventures. The prices are currently $120 for four hours and 200 for eight hours.
Bareboat sailing captains will be looking for high quality charter boats to ensure they get where they're going safely. Now all that is left to do is to choose a location, get certification to sail, purchase the sailing charts, and a bareboat sailing vacation is under way! Bon voyage!
